Oh my god you did it! You ignored Aunt Raquel who said you’d be a great fit for primary teaching and Grand Uncle Thomás who swore he’d leave the farm to you. You had a moment of self doubt when you stuck Commerce in NUIG down beneath Trinity but we forgive you for it so stop hating yourself. You’re in Trinity now, a brilliant cobblestoned hub of social life in Dublin City Centre, characterised by flat whites, leather satchels and rollies outside the Arts Block.
Fresher’s week is your opportunity to pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you’ve done and celebrate like it’s that trip to Maga Mum n’ Dad never let you go on. This week is thicc, spicy, compulsory, extroverted and excessive but that’s okay cause we’re all adults now so stick the family whatsapp on mute and ask the person to your left what course they’re in.
The last time you were in first year the Mayan Calendar ended, Call Me Maybe was No.1 and Kony 2012 was on everybody’s Ask.fm. Absolutely none of these things have anything in common and that’s our point, college is above and beyond petty cliques and tired norms of who’s who and goes where and wears what.
Freshers’ Week is 5 days and 5 nights of electrifying mayhem. Highlights include: slurring your words in the queue to the sound chap from inner Donegal who’s grasp of English is tenuous. Coughing blood into the sleeve of Superdry Hoodie with a sly grin as you say “heh Freshers’ Flu”. Or getting a chicken roll at 4am with your “new best friend” who you’ll avoid awkwardly for the next 12 months. It’s okay we all have a “Jennie”.
Do not be afraid, go to pre drinks and talk shite about how much you loved the poetry question on English Paper 2, share taxis back with people who think wearing a jersey to a nightclub is acceptable, and most of all throw yourself in!
You don’t have to love nights out, you don’t need to know all the words to Toxic, and you don’t even have to be a Fresher. Whether you’re starting, ending or just sort of floundering your way through your academic career in Trinity then there is no better way to kickstart College this September. The worst thing that can happen is missing out xx.
No excuses, this is major, also Dua will probably lip sync anyway so don’t you dare miss out on this cause 3 days at EP took it out of you.
